Gonzales to apologize to fired attorneys

WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he intends on publicly apologizing to the eight U.S. attorneys fired from the Justice Department.

Bloomberg reported that in the attorney general's prepared testimony for his appearance Tuesday in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gonzales maintained he has nothing to hide regarding the attorneys' dismissals.

"I have always sought the truth," Gonzales said. "I never sought to mislead or deceive the Congress or the American people."

Gonzales has been criticized regarding the matter by many governmental officials, both Republican and Democrat, and many have called for his resignation.

While Gonzales has alleged that he fired the eight attorneys in an effort to improve the Justice Department, Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter said the attorney general will now have to prove that to the committee.

"It's kind of hard to unscramble these eggs," the Republican senator and committee head said. "He ought to have a case-by-case analysis, and either justify the reasons for replacing them, or concede that he was wrong."
