Nassau Co., N.Y., man wants Pit bull ban

BROOKVILLE, N.Y., April 14 (UPI) -- A Nassau County, N.Y., man is pushing to have pit bulls banned from the county and the village of Brookville.

Frank Russo is pushing for the ban after two escaped pit bulls killed a cat. The dogs may also have killed Russo's daughter's dog, New York Newsday reported Saturday.

The Russo's 10-year-old Norfolk terrier died from three bites from a large breed dog, said their veterinarian, Ellen Leonhardt.

Leonhardt, who owns two Rottweilers, has her own opinion about banning the breed though.

"I don't have a fear of pit bulls," she said. "I have seen nice pit bulls. It's about training and socializing."

Russo, who is a village trustee for Upper Brookville, insists he is "not looking for revenge."

"A Labrador would never do this, unless it were an abused animal," he added. "A pit bull has to be trained not to do this."
