Fatal crash blamed on bee sting

WAKEFIELD, England, April 14 (UPI) -- A minibus driver in Britain said a bee sting caused him to lose control and veer into an oncoming car, killing the couple in the other car.

Andrew Workman, 26, said he felt a bee sting him in the crotch just before he crashed his vehicle into a car driven by David Johnson -- killing Johnson instantly and causing Johnston's wife of 46 years, Sheila, to suffer fatal injuries, The Daily Mail reported.

Werner Welgemoed, a passenger in the minibus, confirmed Workman's account of the crash.

"We were traveling home from work when a bumble-bee flew into the bus on the driver's side and settled into his crotch," Welgemoed said. "He and I looked down and as we looked up we crossed onto the other side of the road and cars were coming toward us. I passed out."

With Welgemoed's corroboration, and an expert estimating the two vehicles were only traveling a combined maximum speed of 90 mph, no charges will be made against Workman, the newspaper said.
