Luis Posada loses bond on appeal

CHAPARRAL, N.M., April 13 (UPI) -- Alleged Cuban terrorist Luis Posada Carriles remained in a New Mexico jail without bail Friday under a last-minute appeals court decision.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone granted Posada, 79, a $250,000 bond last week in El Paso, Texas, saying he was not a flight risk and was "frail," the El Paso (Texas) Times reported.

Prosecutors won an emergency stay of Cardone's bond order Thursday in the 5th Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

Prosecutors said in court documents there was a "very real risk that (Posada) will flee if released, and, more specifically that he will flee before any appeal (of the bond release) is resolved," the newspaper reported.

Posada faces charges of naturalization fraud and making false statements on his citizenship application. A former CIA operative, Posada is wanted in Venezuela for allegedly masterminding the bombing of a Cuban airliner in 1976.
