WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Episcopal bishops in the United States say that Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has been indecisive in his handling of the debate on homosexuality.
The head of the Anglican Church of Canada has also been critical, the Washington Times reports.
Williams heads the Anglican Communion, a loose union of national churches with 77 million members worldwide. The decision by the U.S. Episcopal Church to consecrate an openly homosexual bishop has thrown the Communion into crisis.
Andrew Hutchinson, the archbishop of Canada, told the Toronto Globe and Mail that Williams "seems to have produced a lack of clear and decisive leadership" in the dispute.
Bishop J. Jon Bruno of Los Angeles, in an interview, compared Williams with Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister who negotiated the 1938 Munich agreement. He said that Williams should act more like wartime British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
At a recent retreat, U.S. bishops rejected a demand that the church pledge not to consecrate gay bishops. They asked Williams to come to the United States to discuss the issue.
