DENVER, April 12 (UPI) -- Same-sex couples in Colorado would be allowed to adopt under a bill given initial approval by state senators in Denver.
The Rocky Mountain News reported Thursday that the state Senate is expected to give the bill its final approval soon. Gov. Bill Ritter has indicated he will sign it.
The vote followed party lines, with Democrats supporting the legislation and Republicans opposing it.
Supporters said the bill would protect children in nontraditional homes by making it easier to provide them with benefits such as health insurance.
Opponents said it was an attack on marriage.
"It's not about protecting children. It is an attack on the traditional family," state Sen. Scott Renfroe, R-Greeley, said in the the newspaper report.
