BAGHDAD, April 12 (UPI) -- A suicide bombing at the Iraqi parliament building in Baghdad Thursday killed at least eight people, including two legislators.

The explosion in the heavily fortified Green Zone came a few hours after one of Baghdad's best-known bridges was destroyed by a bombing that killed at least six people.

The deadly explosion hit the Parliament's cafeteria half an hour after the parliamentary session ended, when the room was packed with lawmakers having lunch, The New York Times said. The bombing was the first in the Green Zone since it was established, and the bomber would have had to pass several checkpoints.

The Times said both dead members of Parliament were Sunnis. At least 23 people, 11 of them members of Parliament, were injured.

"This is a cowardly act and this proves that terrorism is indiscriminate. Sunnis, Shia, Kurds have been injured and maimed and killed in this attack. This should be a reminder that all Iraqis are targeted," said Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh.

Earlier Thursday, a truck bomb exploded on a major bridge in northern Baghdad, killing at least 10 people and injuring 26 others, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

CNN reported that the rush hour suicide bombing sent several cars into the Tigris River. Police searched the river for survivors, the BBC reported.

Video from the scene showed sections of al-Sarafiya bridge had collapsed into the river.
