Czech communist-era agents still in police

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, April 11 (UPI) -- A new vetting campaign of 1,800 Czech police officers has revealed 150 communist-era agents are employed in the security force, media reports said Wednesday.

Czech Interior Minister Ivan Langer recently ordered a new review of personnel after it surfaced in February that Pavol Mihal -- chief of the Czech Interpol -- was on the list of communist secret service agents, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.

Langer said he wanted to get rid of those who had collaborated with the communist police.

However, Czech lawyers are warning that those who lose their jobs after the second vetting campaign for collaborating with the communist regime could sue the state.

They could demand to know why they are being scrutinized again after being cleared several years ago, lawyer Dagmar Raupahova told the Mlada Fronta Dnes daily.
