Cultural event prompts racist vandalism

HAMILTON, Ontario, April 11 (UPI) -- Someone vandalized the office door of a professor at Canada's McMaster University who had organized an event in support of the area's Muslim population.

The vandal left a racist and sexist hate message on the office door of Dr. Muriel Walker, The Hamilton (Ontario) Spectator said. Walker last week organized a Wear a Hijab Day on campus, intended to promote cultural diversity by encouraging students to wear the traditional Muslim head scarf for a day.

Muslim Students Association head Kareem Mirza criticized the school's security force for its reaction to the vandalism.

"Security did not notify Hamilton police of this incident, and, as far as I'm concerned, also failed to document any evidence in regard to this hate crime," Mirza told the paper.
