Surfer sues over infected cut

WAIKIKI, Hawaii, April 10 (UPI) -- A Waikiki, Hawaii, woman is suing the city, saying it should have warned people to stay out of the water after a big sewage discharge last spring.

Lisa Kennedy's lawsuit said she went surfing after 48 million gallons of raw sewage was discharged into Waikiki's Al Wai Canal last spring and cut herself on a piece of coral. She ended up with an infected cut that put her in the hospital for nearly two weeks and blames the polluted water, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported.

Signs posted by the city went up too late, her lawsuit charged.

"The city denies liability for Ms. Kennedy's injury," city spokesman Bill Brennan said in a statement to the Star-Bulletin.

But the city does plan to spend $38 million to make sure another spill doesn't occur, he said.

The sewage discharge occurred because an aging water main gave out and city officials diverted the sewage into the canal.
