ANKARA, Turkey, April 10 (UPI) -- A man who took over a Turkish passenger plane Tuesday with a threat of having explosives onboard gave himself up after the aircraft landed in Ankara.
Applause broke out among the 178 people onboard when they heard the hijacker had surrendered after negotiating with police, the BBC reported. He was taken into custody for further questioning.
No injuries were reported and it was not clear why the hijacker, identified as Mehmet Goksin Gol by the Anatolia news agency, had taken over the flight. There were reports suggesting he wanted to be taken to Iran, the BBC said. The hijacker had claimed to have explosives on board but none was found.
The privately owned Pegasus airliner was enroute from Diyarbakir to Istanbul when the pilot issued a distress signal indicating it had been hijacked, All Headline News reported. The plane then made the emergency landing in Ankara
