White House egg roll backs child fitness

WASHINGTON, April 9 (UPI) -- Monday's annual egg roll at the White House hosted by first lady Laura Bush promoted increased physical fitness among the nation's youth.

The first lady was on hand Monday morning to usher in the holiday tradition that began back in 1878, telling those on hand the importance of the annual Easter Egg Roll.

"In Washington, we know spring has arrived when the White House lawn is filled with children for the Easter Egg Roll," Bush said. "So thank each one of the children for coming. Thank you for bringing an adult with you. Happy Easter."

Also on hand at the event to assist Mrs. Bush in promoting child fitness were personal trainer Denise Austin and the cartoon film character Shrek.

While exercise activities, along with food and entertainment, were available at the event, the day was not complete until the egg roll was conducted.

For this year's event, 7,200 real eggs were prepared for children under seven and each young visitor left the Easter Egg Roll with an official White House wooden egg to commemorate the event.
