Tax refund checks stolen in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, April 8 (UPI) -- State probation and parole agent Vera Hutson says she believes a convicted criminal working for H&R Block in Milwaukee stole her tax refund check.

Police said the check for $8,474.50 was cashed by an unidentified woman at one of the company's machines used exclusively for H&R refund checks, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

After the check was stolen, Hutson started checking names and backgrounds at the office from where the check disappeared, and she found that one of the employees with access to her check and personal information was a felon with a 30-year criminal record -- including murder, robbery, false imprisonment, recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm.

He also faces financial problems in Milwaukee County Circuit Court dealing with home foreclosure.

It has not been confirmed whether the employee in question is connected to the theft, but police are also investigating two similar tax refund check theft cases from the same H&R Block office.
