ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 7 (UPI) -- A Virginia man whose son killed two police officers was released on bond after being charged with providing an arsenal of weapons used in the deadly attack.
The Washington Post reported Saturday that Brian Kennedy, 50, a mild-mannered meat-counter manager, was ordered to stay away from guns and drugs in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.
Kennedy's troubled son, Michael, had swiped a cache of weapons from his father and took them to a Fairfax County Police Department substation where he fired more than 70 rounds in a rampage that killed two officers, Michael Garbarino and Vicky Armel, officials said. The teenaged gunman was shot and killed by other officers.
In Friday's court hearing, the Post said new details had come out about the Kennedy family situation. The eight-count indictment charged Brian Kennedy with possessing 20 guns and 2,500 rounds of ammunition. The document stated that weapons and marijuana were found throughout the Kennedy home and that Brian Kennedy had smoked pot with his son and his friends.
Kennedy has a clean criminal background and legal experts told the Post that the charges against him were "unusual."
