CHICAGO, April 7 (UPI) -- Officials say a thief in Chicago made off with two laptop computers holding the names and Social Security numbers of 40,000 school employees.
The two computers and a backpack were stolen Friday from a conference room at Chicago Public Schools headquarters. Two contractors were using them to track pension fund payments.
"One went to get a sandwich," said Michael Vaughn, a spokesman for CPS. "Another got up to talk to someone in another office. They came back and the laptops were missing."
After reviewing videotape from security cameras, investigators have identified the person they believe to be the thief walking out with a backpack like the one that was stolen. They think the laptops were inside.
CPS has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or to recovery of the laptops.
