Cruise ship runs aground off Greek island

ATHENS, Greece, April 5 (UPI) -- Coast guard crews were evacuating 1,200 passengers and 400 crew from a cruise ship that ran aground off the Greek island of Santorini Thursday.

Most of the passengers aboard the Greek-flagged Sea Diamond were from the United States and Germany, the Times of London reported.

"The boat was attempting to moor but ran aground in shallow waters," a local boatman told Antenna television, the BBC reported. "Weather conditions are good, but the ship is taking on water and has listed heavily."

"All the passengers are safe. Everybody is OK, that is the important thing. We are disembarking the passengers into little boats," a spokeswoman for Louis Hellenic, the Cyprus-based cruise company, told the Times.

The cruise ship was headed into its final leg of a four-day tour of the Greek islands when it ran aground. It was scheduled to reach its final destination, Piraeus, on Friday.
