Cheney visit prompts demonstration in Utah

PROVO, Utah, April 4 (UPI) -- A decision by Brigham Young University to invite U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney to speak at the Utah school prompted two student demonstrations on Wednesday.

More than 200 BYU students gathered at the campus library Wednesday, as the campus debated the school's decision to have Cheney deliver this year's commencement address, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"He made some horribly misleading arguments linking Iraq to attacks on (Sept. 11, 2001)," freshman Heather Marsh said. "We are Mormons and are subject to kings, rulers and magistrates, but we're also upholding the right of popular sovereignty."

"To have such an influential leader come to campus is at worst inconsequential and at best a benefit to the university," junior McKay Young said.

Some BYU alumni are conducting an online petition drive to protest Cheney's April 26 speaking engagement. School officials told the newspaper they will not withdraw the invitation to Cheney.
