GROZNY, Russia, April 4 (UPI) -- Chechnya's interior minister announced in Grozny a guerrilla leader had been hunted down and gunned down by police on Wednesday.
"The so-called commander of the Southeast front (Suleiman) Elmurzayev was liquidated in the Vedeno district of Chechnya today," Ruslan Alkhanov was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass.
Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov said police spent two weeks planning the operation to capture or kill Suleiman Elmurzayev, 32.
"Ten more gunmen were together with Elmurzayev and there were wounded and killed among them," Kadyrov said.
Russia's FSB security service put Elmurzayev on the Interpol most wanted list in 2004 on suspicion he shot down a Russian helicopter in 2003. The pilot was killed, and the crew was badly injured, the report said.
Elmurzayev was also known to be close with Islamist terror leader Shamil Basayev, Kadyrov said.
In an unrelated incident, Alkhanov said police exchanged gunfire with another man in Grozny after he "offered armed resistance when police made an attempt to detain him" and then blew himself up with a grenade.
