LONDON, April 4 (UPI) -- Two British residents held for more than four years at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay had been detained after they refused to be paid informants for Britain.
Papers released under U.S. freedom of information laws say Bisher al-Rawi and Jamil el-Banna had been offered new identities by MI5 before they were detained by the CIA, The Times of London reported Wednesday.
The men refused the offers and were detained as associates of radical cleric Abu Qatada, an al-Qaida leader in Europe.
Lawyers for Banna, who remains imprisoned at Camp Delta, say their client refused to provide "false testimony" against Abu Qatada when he was approached to inform.
Rawi, who denies any ties to extremism, returned to Britain last weekend without being questioned or arrested by British police. He told a U.S. military tribunal that he passed messages from MI5 to Abu Qatada before the radical cleric was jailed.
Both men complained of torture, abuse and mistreatment at the U.S.-run prison.
