Venezuela ex-official breaks out of prison

CARACAS, Venezuela, April 2 (UPI) -- A former Venezuelan state governor awaiting trial on corruption charges has escaped from prison, El Universal reported online Monday.

Eduardo Lapi, who is an outspoken opponent of President Hugo Chavez, was said to have escaped with the help of prison guards through an air conditioning shaft.

Lapi had been in prison since May 2006. He had served as a governor from 1998-2004.

Fellow Chavez opponent Carlos Ortega also escaped from prison in August 2006.
