Clinton, Edwards break fundraising record

WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., reported raising $26 million in the first quarter of 2007 for her presidential campaign, nearly three times the previous record.

Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., also raised more than any previous candidate at this point in a presidential campaign, reporting $14 million in contributions for the quarter that ended Saturday, the Washington Post reported.

The reports are required by federal law.

While the Clinton and Edwards campaign announced their figures publicly, the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., did not. Obama has held multiple fundraising events recently, and takes second place to Clinton in many polls measuring the preference of Democratic voters.

None of the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination announced their fundraising tallies publicly, the Post said.

"We dramatically exceeded our goals and expectations," said Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle.

The previous fundraising record for the period was $8.9 million, set in 1999 by former Vice President Al Gore.
