TBILISI, Georgia, April 1 (UPI) -- The body of the first president of Georgia after the breakup of the Soviet Union was reburied Sunday in the capital city of Tbilisi 14 years after his death.
Thousands of admirers of Zviad Gamsakhurdia followed his coffin through the streets to the parliament building for a public viewing, the BBC said. Many chanted his name and carried pictures of the late leader, who was buried on what would have been his 68th birthday.
Gamsakhurdia served as president only for several months in 1991 before being ousted during a rebellion. He led an unsuccessful uprising against Eduard Shevardnadze in 1993 and then died under murky circumstances with his widow claiming he was murdered and officials ruling his death a suicide.
He was first buried in western Georgia and then in Grozny.
