British MP Clarke eyeing Labor Party bid

LONDON, April 1 (UPI) -- British Member of Parliament Charles Clarke says that, under the right conditions, he would consider running for the leadership of the Labor Party.

The former home secretary said if Environment Secretary David Miliband does not oppose Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown for the group's top spot, he would run in his place, the Sunday Times of London reported.

"I am not going to rule out under any circumstances running," Clarke said.

Clarke has said he would not make a firm decision on the matter until Prime Minister Tony Blair officially resigns his position. He said if he were to run, he would do so in an attempt to force the Labor Party to re-evaluate its future through policy debate.

Pairing with former health secretary Alan Milburn, Clarke recently launched the 2020 Vision Web site, which is oriented toward reorienting the party's current position, the paper said.
