Maine gunman dead after standoff

AUBURN, Maine, March 31 (UPI) -- A standoff in Maine ended Saturday when a 42-year-old man who allegedly had killed his elderly mother was found dead inside their home.

James Peters appeared to have been shot to death after holding Auburn police at bay for some 18 hours, a report said.

The Lewiston (Maine) Sun-Journal said police moved in during the wee hours of the morning and found Peters dead, although it was not entirely certain if he was killed by a police bullet or had killed himself.

Police were called to the home Friday morning after Margaret Peters, 70, was shot dead in her nightgown in the driveway. Her son retreated into the house with an assault rifle and exchanged fire with arriving officers. One state trooper suffered cuts from flying glass in the standoff.

The incident was a tragic end to the Peters family saga, the Sun-Journal said -- James' father choked to death in the house in 2001. His brother, John, committed suicide last year.
