SWAMPSCOTT, Mass., March 30 (UPI) -- A Swampscott, Mass., high school student was badly burned and temporarily blinded after a homemade bomb made with a mixture of alcohol and chlorine exploded.
Jaren Richard, 15, and some friends made the mixture using instructions they found on the Internet, WHDV-TV, Boston, reported Friday. When they placed a cap on the bottle it exploded, spraying the mixture on the teenager. His friends immediately washed the boy's eyes out with a hose.
"The police were the ones who informed him and myself of how powerful it was," said Jaren's mother, Dianne Richard. "It's a bomb. They actually created a bomb, and by capping it, the explosion ... it was as powerful as a shotgun."
WHDV said it could be up to six months before Jaren's eyes heal completely.
Police said they are still investigating the incident and have not ruled out filing charges.
