LOGAN, W.Va., March 30 (UPI) -- The owner of a West Virginia mine where two miners died in a smoke-filled escape tunnel has been fined a record $1.5 million.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration found flagrant safety violations at Massey Energy's Aracoma No. 1 mine near Logan, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
"The number and severity of safety violations at the mine at the time of the fire demonstrated reckless disregard for safety, warranting the highest fine MSHA has levied for a fatal coal mining accident," said Richard Stickler, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health.
Don Bragg, Ellery "Elvis" Hatfield and 10 other miners were underground when the fire broke out in January 2006. The miners found that a sealed escape route was full of smoke and abandoned their escape vehicle, instead feeling their way along the wall.
When the miners reached a door to the outside, they discovered Hatfield and Bragg were missing. Miners went back to try to find them and finally had to give up.
