HONOLULU, March 27 (UPI) -- Adm. Timothy Keating has been installed as commander of U.S. Pacific forces during a ceremony in Hawaii.
Monday at Camp H.M. Smith, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Keating has the experience to oversee the country's largest combatant command, one that covers just over half the surface of the earth and includes 43 countries, the Armed Forces Press Service said. The secretary said that during his Navy career, Keating has defended the country against all kinds of weapons -- "some so small that they could even fit inside a thimble."
"His area of responsibility ranged from our nation's cities and coastlines to outer space and everything in between," Gates added.
Keating in his previous post headed U.S. Northern Command. He has also commanded a carrier group and the Fifth Fleet during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Representatives of some of the countries in the Pacific Command, including Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Korea, attended the ceremony.
Keating succeeds Adm. William Fallon, now head of Central Command, which includes Iraq and Afghanistan.
