EU pushes Iran on nuclear settlement

BRUSSELS, March 27 (UPI) -- The European Union foreign policy chief has made a direct call from Brussels for Iran to resume talks on its disputed uranium enrichment program.

Javier Solana called Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani on Monday and told him the international community wants a negotiated settlement, the Voice of America reported Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Solana said only that the two men agreed to speak again soon.

Solana called after Iran announced during the weekend it was reducing its cooperation with the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog agency in response to heightened Security Council sanctions. The latest sanctions ban all Iranian arms exports and set a 60-day deadline for Tehran to cease uranium enrichment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Hu Jintao also issued statements for Iran to return to negotiations and compliance over its nuclear program.

Tehran insists it has a right to its own nuclear energy program, and denies international allegations it is enriching uranium with a goal of creating a nuclear arsenal.
