BERLIN, March 25 (UPI) -- Ex-Red Army Faction stalwart Brigitte Mohnhaupt was freed Sunday in Bavaria after 24 years in a German prison for multiple murders and kidnappings.
The release of the 57-year-old former Baader-Meinhof gang member from Aichach prison came despite testimony from the family of one of the group's victims, German industrialist Hans Martin Schleyer, the BBC said.
"I can't understand that we would (let) them out because within the last 30 years there's nothing they said -- 'OK we're sorry we murdered your father, sorry for that, we murdered policemen, sorry for that.' Absolutely no word," said his son, Joerg Schleyer.
A court ruled last month that Mohnhaupt qualified for early release after serving a minimum proportion of the five life sentences she received for nine slayings.
Another prominent member of the organization that fomented violence against German capitalism from the 1970s into the 1990s, Christian Klar, has requested release from prison as well as a pardon, the BBC said.
