Former Gonzalez aide Sampson will testify

WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- D. Kyle Sampson has agreed to testify before Congress about his role in the controversial firing of eight U.S. attorneys by the Bush administration.

Sampson, the former chief of staff to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, said through his lawyer late Friday that he would testify next week at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The sacking of the prosecutors has stirred up allegations of political motivation in Congress, which is now controlled by the Democrats. The Senate and House Judiciary Committees have been authorized to subpoena Sampson, White House Counsel Harriett Reed and Bush political aid Karl Rove.

"Mr. Sampson looks forward to answering the committee's questions," Berenson said. "We trust that his decision to do so will satisfy the need of the Congress to obtain information from him concerning the requested resignations of the United States attorneys."

Salt Lake City's Deseret News said Saturday that the committee rejected a request by Sampson to delay the hearing until April. Sampson is a Utah native.
