Sweden-Cuba clash intensifies

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 23 (UPI) -- The war of words between Sweden and Cuba has deepened, with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt reaffirming his attacks on Cuba's human rights record.

Bildt also said mail for Sweden's diplomatic mission in Havana had been tampered with, the Swedish newspaper The Local reported Friday.

A diplomatic row erupted between the nations earlier this week after Bildt criticized Cuba's human rights record.

The minister made his critical remarks to the U.N. Human Rights Council, The Local reported Wednesday.

Cuba's delegate to the Human Rights Council, Rodolfo Reyes Rodriguez, retaliated verbally, saying that "Cuba, unlike Sweden, does not persecute migrants or carry out ethnic cleansing that only allows those whose skin and hair color fit with the racial patterns of former Viking conquerors to remain in the country."
