Husband charged with lover's death 'sorry'

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., March 23 (UPI) -- A Knoxville, Tenn., man charged with killing a high school student who was having an affair with his wife called the March shooting "a total disaster."

"Every day, like, I think, I think about (victim Sean Powell's) family and I just feel really horrible ... and I just wish that none of this had happened. It's just a total disaster," Eric McLean said in a jailhouse interview with NBC's "Today."

McLean has been charged with first-degree murder for shooting Powell, 18, after the teenager showed up at the home McLean shared with his wife, Erin McLean, and their two sons.

Eric McLean wouldn't discuss the shooting, but he said his wife had shown an unusual interest in Powell since she'd started student teaching his class, and his sons had reported that the two had been holding hands on an outing.

McLean said he hasn't spoken to his wife since the shooting.

When he was asked what he would say if he did, he said, "Sorry. I was, you know ... Sorry. I still love her."
