In oil-rich Kirkuk, CNN reported six explosions killed at least 10 people and wounded 37 others.

Police told CNN four of the explosions were car bombs and the other two were planted beside roads.

The BBC said one of the blasts was near a mosque in the predominantly Kurdish city. Others targeted a police patrol, a mobile phone company and a government education ministry building, CNN said.

Kirkuk is a hub of the oil-rich northern region, about 150 miles north of Baghdad.

The country is ensnared in sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and violence has fanned out from Baghdad following a joint Iraqi-U.S. security sweep of the city in mid-February.
