SENDAI, Japan, March 16 (UPI) -- A Japanese man who killed three people with his truck in a fit of rage has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.
Seiji Otomo was convicted of murder, attempted murder and professional negligence by the Sendai District Court, Mainichi Shimbun reported.
Otomo killed one person and injured two others when he drove through a red light. He drove into a shopping arcade where he killed two more people, with two more injured, and then left the arcade and set his truck on fire.
Defense lawyers argued that Otomo had hallucinations and did not have a murderous intent. Prosecutors, who asked for a life sentence, said he was able to drive around objects and argued that he was not completely out of control.
Otomo told the court he does not understand why he acted as he did.
