3 NYC detectives charged in killing

NEW YORK, March 16 (UPI) -- Three New York City police detectives were indicted Friday in the fatal shooting of a young unarmed black man on his wedding day, a defense lawyer said.

Philip Karasyk, who represents Detective Gescard Isnora, told The New York Times his client and detectives Michael Oliver and Marc Cooper were charged in the case. Two other detectives at the scene of the November 2006 shooting were not charged, the newspaper said.

Two of the indicted detectives are white and the other black.

Sean Bell, 23, had just left his bachelor party at a nightclub in Queens when he died in a hail of police bullets 12 hours before his wedding. The detectives had set up a stakeout outside the nightclub.

Two of Bell's friends were wounded. Both testified before the grand jury.

Karasyk did not know the specific charges against the detectives. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown plans to release the indictment at a news conference Monday morning.

"Obviously, my client is upset, and he's looking forward to having his day in court, and we're all confident he will be vindicated," Karasyk said.
