Prosecutors check out Duke lacrosse house

DURHAM, N.C., March 15 (UPI) -- North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper had no comment Thursday after touring the vacant Duke lacrosse team house that was the alleged site of a rape.

Cooper, who took over the case in January, spent less than a half-hour at the Durham property with special prosecutors and other officials, the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer said. Special prosecutors James Coman and Mary Winstead spent part of that time measuring the edge of a fence to the back door.

"At this point, we expect the investigation to wrap up in the next few weeks," Cooper spokeswoman Jennifer Canada told the newspaper. "Our attorneys have continued to interview witnesses and investigate evidence."

A year ago this week, an escort-service dancer hired by team members alleged she was gang-raped by some team members. Three players -- Dave Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann -- were charged with sexual assault and kidnapping.

The case was placed in the hands of the special prosecutors after Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong asked to be removed. He faces ethical complaints brought by the State Bar and the potential loss of his law license.
