CHICAGO, March 15 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Chicago has ordered an investigation into whether two people lost their jobs because of their grand jury service.

The chief judge of the U.S. District Court, James Holderman, found "probable cause" that the two were fired because they were grand jurors, The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

"Jury service, whether it be on a grand jury or a trial jury, is an obligation of citizenship," Holderman said.

Citizens selected for a grand jury serve one day a week for as long as 18 months.

The two grand jurors who were dismissed are Darren Blake, a custodian at Evanston Township High School, and Katherine Bregar, a case manager for a non-profit serving the developmentally disabled, Cornerstone Services Inc. Both employers say that the dismissals were not related to grand jury service.

Blake's lawyer, Richard Gonzalez, said that his client's supervisor asked him if the grand jury was "some kind of vacation."
