WASHINGTON, March 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to debate a measure that calls for the majority of U.S. troops to be withdrawn from Iraq in early 2008.

The Senate voted 89-9 to approve debate of the Democratic resolution, which sets March 31, 2008, as the target date for withdrawal of all but a "limited number" of U.S. troops from Iraq, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

However, the measure is opposed by the vast majority of Senate Republicans and they may choose to vote to cut off debate -- a tactic that has so far blocked two non-binding resolutions opposing the war that were introduced by Democrats.

"It is far past time that we brought our involvement in this misguided war to a close," Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., said on the Senate floor after Wednesday's vote. "This is binding legislation that would bring to an end our involvement in perhaps the greatest foreign policy mistake in our country's history."
