Russia to introduce terror alert system

MOSCOW, March 14 (UPI) -- Russian officials say the National Anti-Terrorist Committee is working on a system that would alert the public of any terrorist threats.

A committee member said Tuesday that the planned system being constructed with the help of several executive agencies would ensure that the Russian public would receive appropriate communication regarding any impending threats, the Moscow Times said.

Such efforts are integral after Federal Security Service director Nikolai Patrushev caused a nationwide panic on Jan. 16 by issuing a terror warning without proper evidence.

While Patrushev maintained there were threats about a public transportation attack, many speculated the event had simply been a preparedness test.

As part of Russia's anti-terrorism efforts, the nation is planning 300 preparedness exercises for 2007.

The Moscow Times said that the new system would also involve an agreement with journalists, who the committee wants to orient their reporting to limit information given to terrorists.
