BERKELEY, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- The Berkeley, Calif., City Council has voted unanimously to push Germany toward a war crimes indictment against former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The council declined, however, to join a lawsuit intended to force an indictment, MediaNews reported.
The suit also accuses other U.S. officials -- including former Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo -- of complicity in alleged war crimes against detainees.
Berkeley City Manager Phil Kamlarz said the council did not feel confident joining the suit.
"The city does not have the resources to investigate and evaluate whether such a criminal complaint would be justified," he said, "or whether the city would suffer any fiscal or other legal consequences from joining such a complaint charging United States officials with crimes in a foreign country."
Human rights organizations in 24 countries, as well as three Nobel Peace Prize winners, have joined the suit as co-plaintiffs, MediaNews said.
