
AUSTIN, Texas, March 13 (UPI) -- Heavy rain pounding central and eastern Texas was responsible for the drowning deaths of two women who were swept away by flash flooding in separate incidents.
As much of 7 inches of rain fell in some counties Monday and the precipitation was forecast to continue through Wednesday afternoon, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Tuesday.
Near Seguin, 24-year-old Mary Quest's compact car stalled in 3 feet of water. Three people traveling with her managed to escape before the car was washed into a fast-rushing creek tributary, police said.
In Comal County, the lone passenger with Gloria Shirk, 52, escaped from her car before it was swept away, the report said. Officials said they found Shirk's body hours later about a mile from her car.
Tornado warnings were issued and funnel clouds were spotted Monday, but there were no reports of any touching down, weather service forecaster Dennis Cook told the San Antonio Express News.
