Support for Iraq troop 'surge' up slightly

WASHINGTON, March 13 (UPI) -- While support for President Bush's Iraq surge has grown slightly, a majority of U.S. voters want U.S. troops home within a year, a CNN poll said.

The survey of 1,027 adults found that 59 percent oppose the troop increase. Support for the plan has grown from 32 percent to 37 percent since a poll released on Jan. 11, shortly after Bush announced the surge while opposition has declined from 66 percent to 59 percent.

Just over half of respondents, 52 percent, said Congress should cut off funding for the troop increase, while 43 percent oppose such a move.

On the question of how long the U.S. military should remain in Iraq, 21 percent say the troops should leave immediately and 37 percent want them out within a year. However, 39 percent said the United States should remain in Iraq as long as necessary.

Bush in January proposed increasing the size of the U.S. force in Iraq by up to 21,500. He recently said that an additional 4,400 support troops would be added.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
