WASHINGTON, March 13 (UPI) -- House Democrats have so far agreed to add $21 billion to the $103 billion President George Bush asked for in emergency funding for the war in Iraq.
Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., said some compromises had been made to the draft bill, which runs to 171 pages, including stripping out language that would bar Bush from attacking Iran without congressional approval.
Obey told the Wall Street Journal he expects there still to be debate among Democrats when the bill is taken up Thursday about provisions of setting a deadline and provisions for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to meet political and military benchmarks by Oct. 1, or risk a U.S. pull-out next spring.
"What we're trying to do is put together anything that will put some legitimate pressure on the Iraqi politicians to either enter the Modern Age or make clear they intend to remain in the Stone Age," Obey said.
