Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
GENEVA, Switzerland, March 12 (UPI) -- A U.N. mission Monday called the international response to the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region "pathetic" and advised urgent intervention.
"There are gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, the government is complicit in those crimes with the Janjaweed militia that it arms and trains," Jody Williams, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and head of the mission, told the BBC.
A report presented to the U.N. Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, accused the Khartoum government of "orchestrating and participating" systematic rape, kidnapping and ethnic dislocation in Darfur, where at least 200,000 Africans have died since 2002 and millions have been left homeless.
The Sudanese government would not permit Williams' team to visit Darfur so the five investigators interviewed refugees in neighboring Chad.
Sudan's justice minister said the U.N. mission's report was "biased."
