Israel arrests 40 in West Bank sweep

JERUSALEM, March 12 (UPI) -- An Israeli military sweep in the West Bank Monday resulted in the arrests of at least 40 Palestinians on terror charges.

Soldiers went door-to-door in and around the cities of Jenin and Ramallah, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported.

Israel Radio said most of those arrested were members of the militant factions of either Hamas or Fatah, and many were students.

Elsewhere, the militant Fatah group claimed to have fired three rockets into Israel to protest construction at the Temple Mount near Jerusalem, site of the Aqsa mosque, the report said.

Muslims are concerned the Israeli project involving deep digging will weaken the foundation of the ancient mosque, and there is dissent even among Israeli archaeologists and engineers about the work.

Meanwhile, Palestinian officials were investigating the Sunday night kidnapping of a captain in the Palestinian Authority's security force, KUNA said. Yusri Abu Zaid was taken from his home in northern Gaza by armed men who also set fire to his car, the report said.
