GAZA, March 12 (UPI) -- Hamas activists Monday rejected criticism by deputy al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri that the Palestinians had surrendered and betrayed their principles.
"We will not forsake a single grain of sand in Palestine," Hamas said in a statement following the accusations Sunday by al-Zawahiri prompted by the Mecca peace agreement with rival Fatah. The agreement ended months of fighting between the Hamas and Fatah factions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The al-Jazeera satellite news network broadcast a video of al-Zawahiri in which the militant "eulogized" Hamas for its alleged betrayal of the Palestinian people, YNet News reported.
A Hamas spokesman said while the group values al-Zawahiri's advice it has not given up and had "not forsaken its principles."
"We are a movement of jihad and of resistance and will continue to be so as long as a single centimeter of the land of Palestine is under occupation," the Hamas statement said.
