Aso supports brothel re-investigation

TOKYO, March 11 (UPI) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso said he would support an investigation by the ruling Democratic Liberal Party of wartime brothels run by the Japanese army.

Kyodo News reported on Aso's support for a political party, rather than the government itself, conducting a re-investigation.

"I haven't heard that the government is conducting an investigation," Aso said Sunday. "It is not necessarily bad to conduct another round of investigations. It may be better perhaps that it is done by the party."

Aso's comment was made in reference to a recent request by the Liberal Democratic Party to seek a re-investigation, which followed preliminary moves in the U.S. Congress on a resolution urging Japan to apologize for forcing Asian women to have sex with Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Aso said he does not fear that the re-investigation will strain Japan- U.S. relations.
