Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
VIENNA, March 10 (UPI) -- Negotiations over the future of Kosovo ended in Vienna Saturday with no agreement between Serbian and ethnic Albanian leaders, the BBC said.
Martti Ahtisaari, the United Nations envoy who chaired the Kosovo talks, told reporters that there wasn't much hope that further discussions would make any progress, so he would make his own proposal to the Security Council on how Kosovo will be run.
"The parties' respective statements on Kosovo's status do not include any common ground," Ahtisaari summed up.
At issue is the desire of the majority Albanian community to see self-rule in Kosovo, something the Serbs staunchly oppose.
The BBC said the Serbs want their Russia to veto any self-rule plan. Analysts say the European Union and United States are cautioning that the Albanians could declare Kosovo independent if they don't get their way, which could lead to a new round of ethnic violence in the Balkans.
