D.C. madam phone lists causing a buzz

WASHINGTON, March 10 (UPI) -- The formal proceedings are over for now, but Washington remains abuzz over the case of an alleged top-shelf madam and her little black book.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey pleaded innocent Friday to charges of running a call-girl ring that had a client list presumed to include a fair share of Beltway big shots.

The Washington Post said Saturday that Palfrey has put about 100,000 phone numbers dating back to 1993 up for sale as a means of financing her defense. Her lawyer said at least a dozen cash offers had been made by unnamed media outlets.

No names have been released, but the bidding war for the records is expected to produce at least a few recognizable names.

Madame Palfrey is in California until the trial starts. Before flying west she read a statement to a gaggle of reporters and bemused passersby denying she was running a "legal, high-end erotic fantasy service."
