Vets said facing disability pay problems

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UPI) -- Iraq war veterans across the United States are facing serious inequities in disability compensation, a report said Friday.

Some have to wait nearly two years after being injured in Iraq for a disability check, The New York Times said. The report said the wait depends on where the veteran lives and whether on active duty or in a National Guard or reserve unit.

That is said to help determine whether some soldiers wait nearly twice as long as others to get benefits and collect less money from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The agency said it was trying to correct the situation.

Critics say part of the problem stems from the department's failing to prepare for predictable surges in demand.

Reports indicate the influx of Iraq war veterans has nearly overwhelmed an agency already struggling with healthcare and other key needs of more than 3 million veterans.
